Why Your Refrigerator Is Making a Loud Noise (And What To Do)
A noisy refrigerator is one of the most common calls we get at Wazy. The good news: not every noise means a major repair. Here's how to tell what's going on.
Common refrigerator noises and their causes
Humming or buzzing
Normal. This is usually the compressor running or the defrost timer. If the humming is unusually loud or constant, it could be the compressor starting to fail.
Clicking
Often the ice maker cycling. Clicking at startup or shutdown is also normal. Rapid repeated clicking can indicate a relay problem on the compressor.
Gurgling or dripping sounds
This is refrigerant flowing through the lines — perfectly normal, especially after the compressor shuts off.
Rattling or vibrating
Check that the fridge is level. A loose drain pan underneath can rattle too. If the noise is coming from inside, it could be the evaporator fan.
When to call us
If your fridge is making a loud grinding or squealing noise, or if food is warming up alongside the noise, that's time to call. These often signal a failing fan motor or compressor issue that will only get worse.
