Gas vs Electric Dryer: Which Is Cheaper to Run in Ontario?

By Wazy Appliance Repair Team · · 1 min read

This question comes up a lot when homeowners in London are replacing a dryer. Here's an honest breakdown based on Ontario energy rates.

The short answer

In Ontario, gas dryers are cheaper to operate — typically 50–70% less per load than electric. However, if you don't already have a gas line to your laundry area, the installation cost changes the math.

Operating cost comparison

Electric dryer: A typical cycle uses about 5 kWh. At Ontario's mid-peak rate (~15¢/kWh), that's about 75¢ per load.

Gas dryer: A typical cycle uses about 0.22 therms of natural gas. At current Enbridge rates, that's about 20–25¢ per load.

The hidden costs

Gas dryers require a licensed gas technician for installation — which is something we handle. We're TSSA gas certified and can install gas appliances safely and legally. We also offer free quotes for gas appliance installs.

Which should you choose?

If you already have a gas hookup: go gas. If you're starting from scratch, get a quote on the gas line installation and do the math against your laundry frequency. We're happy to advise — call us at 519-854-4376.
